On ne s'étonnera pas du démenti que vient d'apporter Michel Rocard, par téléphone, depuis l’Egypte, où il est en vacances. Selon notre traducteur, ce texte n’en constitue pas moins un témoignage éloquent, soit de la mauvaise foi des journalistes d’A-Sharq al-Awsat, soit de Rocard lui-même.

Selon l’ancien Premier ministre français : Israël constitue un cas aberrant dans le monde et son instauration par la déclaration Balfour est une erreur historique.

Alexandrie (Égypte) : A-Sharq al-Awsat[1] [18 juin 2004]

Dans une critique vigoureuse d’Israël, M. Michel Rocard, ancien Premier ministre français, l’a qualifié de «cas aberrant[2]» et a estimé que la déclaration Balfour, par laquelle la Grande-Bretagne instaurait un foyer national pour les Juifs en Palestine, était une «erreur historique».

Dans un même souffle, Rocard a également critiqué la politique américaine au Moyen-Orient, affirmant que la France s’opposerait aux Etats-Unis, chaque fois qu'ils seraient dans l’erreur, et qu'elle serait à la pointe du combat contre la politique américaine, en s’appuyant sur les Nations Unies pour établir la paix dans la région.

Au cours de cette conférence, organisée par la Bibliothèque d'Alexandrie sur le thème "les relations entre l’Amérique, l’Europe et le Proche-Orient", Monsieur Rocard a encore dit, avant-hier soir, que la déclaration Balfour, par laquelle l’Angleterre accordait aux Juifs l’établissement de l’État d’Israël avait été une «erreur».

Et l’ancien Premier ministre français de poursuivre en affirmant qu’Israël a été créé historiquement sur un fondement raciste. Il a qualifié l’État juif de cas isolé, créé par une déclaration, où se sont regroupés des millions de Juifs du monde entier et qui est même devenu une menace pour ses voisins.

Rocard a redit, en arabe[3], «sa conviction qu’Israël représentait un cas aberrant dans la communauté internationale, et qu'il était devenu un État surarmé constituant une menace pour la région.»

Former French PM: Creation of Israel by Balfour Declaration a Historic Mistake


GAZA, June 19, 2004 (IPC + Asharq Al-Awsat)-- The former French Prime Minister and current member of the European Parliament, Michel Rocard, blasted Israel as an "abnormal case in the world", describing its creation by the 1917-Balfour Declaration as a "historic mistake".

Rocard, who is also a well-known member of the French Socialist Party, was delivering a lecture at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina on June 16, in which he said that the Balfour promise England gave to the Jews to create a national homeland for them in Palestine was a "mistake".

He also described the Israeli state as a "unique and abnormal condition because it was created with a promise, and that millions of Jews gathered from all around the world, creating an entity that continues to pose a threat to its neighbors until today."

Rocard also drew attention to the fact that Israel was also historically created on a racist basis, depending on armed conflict to set its borders. Rocard referred to the colonization of the Arab world, of which his country was involved in, as the main reason behind the current state of violence and conflict in the Middle East.

However, Rocard warned that delaying a peace agreement between the Arab states and Israel would "greatly increase violence in the region," pointing out that the long-demanded reforms in the Arab states stemmed from the inside, not imposed by outside forces.

"Peace must spring from a religious base … all reforms can be made possible through the teachings of our divine religions. To pray to God is accepted, but violence is not,” concluded Rocard.
