Apology for Persecution, By Canon Andrew White
ICCJ News No. 24 -- The international Director of Coventry Cathedral, Canon Andrew White, once chairman of the ICCJ Young Leadership Section, led a service at the House of Lords which he described as "a public confession of Christian fault before God and the Jewish people in the very place where exclusion of the Jews from our national life began". This was a reference to the expulsion of the Jews from Britain in 1290 under King Edward I at the British House of Lords. The declaration which was presented to the Lord Mayor of London, Lord Levene, who accepted it on behalf of the Queen, noted: "We recognise that many persecutions, and even the Holocaust ... had their origins within the Christian Church. We repent of our wrongdoing towards the Jewish people, and pledge ourselves to work tirelessly against antisemitism in all its forms, and especially within the church."
