May 22, 2008 - New York - The American Jewish Committee today applauded a French court's decision to acquit Philippe Karsenty, and his company Media Ratings, of libel charges.
"We are pleased the French justice system has paved the way for much-needed and long-awaited clarification in the al-Dura case," said Valérie Hoffenberg, director AJC France.
Karsenty and Media Ratings had been charged with libel by France 2. They had accused the television station of releasing heavily edited and, therefore, distorted footage in which Muhammad Al-Dura, a Palestinian youth, was reportedly killed by Israeli gunfire in the Gaza Strip in September 2000.
The 12-year-old boy became an instant icon for the Palestinian cause. The partial footage of the tragedy was shown repeatedly on television worldwide, fuelling extensive acts of violence and terror against Israel.
